Clad-wood windows and doors

Wood has been at the heart of our products for more than 120 years. Its strength, rigidity, beauty, and thermal performance continue to set our products apart. Find out how we preserve wood’s best qualities by adding various cladding materials for virtually maintenance-free exteriors.

What is a clad-wood window? What is a clad-wood door?

A clad-wood window or clad-wood door is one that’s made of wood with a protective material covering it on the exterior. All our wood window and door products are clad. The exterior materials we use as claddings are low maintenance and never need repainting. Perma-Shield® cladding, extruded aluminum, and fiberglass composite are the materials we use. Each of these cladding materials offers unique benefits, but all are durable and aesthetically pleasing. They offer the opportunity for beautiful and insulating wood interiors without extra exterior maintenance.

How does wood compare to other materials?

The advantage of all our wood windows is that they’re clad. Wood interiors offer authenticity and beauty while the exterior claddings help provide protection for long-term durability. The range of materials we use allows us to offer clad-wood windows at varied price points so you can have the beauty of wood whatever your budget. As you’re researching product options, you’re likely to run across these choices from other manufacturers:

Vinyl:

Vinyl is a thermally unstable material, which means it’s susceptible to warping and seal failure. This is why we use it solely as a cladding material. Our vinyl cladding is called Perma-Shield® and is used on 200 Series and 400 Series product lines. With a Perma-Shield cladding and wood interior, our 200 Series and 400 Series products aren’t comparable to all-vinyl products. Look instead to our composite 100 Series line for products competitive with all-vinyl options.

Which type of cladding is best?

While the cladding material matters, it’s important to remember that it doesn’t exist in isolation. How and where the cladding is applied, or, in other words, how the window is designed, is just as important. When materials and design are combined well like in our products, they support the performance and aesthetics of the finished product and help to improve longevity. We know how to put the right materials in the right places to make quality clad-wood windows and doors — we pioneered the process more than 50 years ago.

Using a variety of cladding materials helps us offer product lines that meet various price points without sacrificing quality. Here’s a side-by-side comparison of our clad-wood options so you can see how price shifts with the offerings available.
