A cozy cabin nestled on the shore of Lake Superior

Architecture firm Olson Kundig collaborated with homeowner Krissie Mason to design a compact cabin of about 800 square feet. Purposeful windows and door selections help make the most of the cabin’s stunning location while also complementing the homeowner’s lifestyle. The cabin includes a MultiGlide™ Door, measuring 20 feet wide and 7 feet tall, expansive 400 Series Casement Windows with contemporary profiles, and a Pivot Door. Originally planned as a fixed glass wall, the MultiGlide Door maximizes indoor/outdoor living while minimizing cold winds or weather from the lake — thanks to energy-efficient features, like the Low-E4® glass coating. The absence of railings on the spacious deck outside enhances the view and allows unimpeded flow from cabin to deck effectively doubling cabin’s space. The 400 Series Windows in the kitchen are 5 feet 9 inches tall, with clean geometric lines complementing the home’s modern aesthetic. A bright red, energy-efficient Pivot Door adds a warm welcome at the front of the home while also creating a modern first impression. Honoring the area's Scandinavian and German traditions, Mason sourced materials and decor from local businesses, including Minnesota-based Andersen®, blending heritage with modern design.

“I had to look for something that was more elevated, more energy efficient, and could hold tight to the gale force winds, so we went with an Andersen door.”

Krissie Mason, Homeowner

“I went with Andersen’s 400 Series Casement Windows because of the size options. My countertop flows right into the outdoors. Having a window style that could match that sense of openness and let in all the air and beautiful scenery was really vital for me.”

Krissie Mason, Homeowner
