A Lake Michigan home frames its environment
This Lake Michigan residence uses A-Series windows and doors to frame views of nature and create a simple exterior composition, which harmonizes with its surroundings. Bill Costello, AIA, CEO of Streeter Custom Builder, designed the home as a gathering place for his family and friends and as a short-term rental property. Both uses influenced his design decisions, as it was vital that the home be both welcoming and durable for a long time to come. Forty feet of windows and doors facing the lake make the most of the stunning view while providing easy access to the waterfront. Adding windows and doors on the opposite side of the home creates a viewshed that runs directly through to the lake, so visitors are immersed in the setting immediately upon arrival. At night, the house glows from the inside giving a feeling of warmth fitting a family gathering place. While aesthetics were an important part of designing a home in such a beautiful location, functionality was just as key. The A-Series product line provides the performance needed to weather the storms on this Great Lakes property as well as the durability required for its rental use.

Two full walls of glass on opposing walls create a viewshed that runs all the way through the house to the teal waters of Lake Michigan.
“At night, the house is a jewel box of light inviting family and friends inside.”
- Bill Costello AIA, CEO of Streeter Custom Builder

The form of the house was kept simple, with the goal of the exterior deferring to the beautiful surroundings and serving more as a backdrop than a flashy centerpiece.

An A-Series Gliding Patio Door is used for an easy indoor/outdoor transition, making the most of the location directly on the shores of Lake Michigan without sacrificing the cohesiveness of the interior design.

The light-flooded living room was made as a gathering place for the architect's family and friends or those using it as a vacation rental home. The use of A-Series windows and doors creates an indoor/outdoor living experience that prioritizes the location.

By using windows and doors as walls, plentiful natural light is available throughout the house.
