Creating Homes Without Barriers: Andersen's Longstanding Work with Jared Allen's Homes for Wounded Warriors

A look at how Andersen and Jared Allen's Homes for Wounded Warriors are helping create homes that support greater accessibility, comfort and independence for wounded veterans and their families.
  • Andersen has supported Jared Allen's Homes for Wounded Warriors since 2018, helping create fully accessible, mortgage-free homes for injured U.S. military veterans.
  • Andersen has donated windows and doors to 12 veteran families and home projects across the country, supporting mobility, comfort and long-term independence.
  • Since 2023, Andersen's Parts Store Veterans Day promotion has helped raise additional funds to support wounded veterans and their families.

A home should be a place of comfort, safety and independence. For veterans who have sustained life-changing injuries while serving our country, a home designed around their unique needs can make a meaningful difference in everyday life, helping create greater accessibility, mobility and confidence at home.

Since 2018, Andersen has worked with Jared Allen's Homes for Wounded Warriors (JAH4WW), a nonprofit organization that builds injury-specific, accessible mortgage-free accessible homes for veterans who sustained severe injuries during their military service. During this time, Andersen has donated windows and doors to 12 veteran families and home projects across the United States, helping create homes that support greater mobility, comfort and long-term independence.

Through donations of windows and doors, financial support and employee donations matched by the company, Andersen has helped expand the organization's impact.

Most recently, Andersen supported the completion of a custom, mortgage-free accessible home for Marine Lance Corporal Josh Wege in Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin. Wege sustained life-changing injuries while serving in Afghanistan. Alongside his family, he received the keys to a home designed around his unique accessibility and mobility needs. The home, which was made possible through the collaboration of Jared Allen's Homes for Wounded Warriors, local businesses, tradespeople and supporters, reflects how thoughtful design and strong community partnerships can help wounded veterans achieve greater independence, comfort and long-term quality of life.

Andersen's involvement extends beyond the homes themselves. Since 2023, Andersen's Parts Store has hosted an annual Veterans Day promotion, donating a portion of sales to JAH4WW.

JAH4WW was founded in 2009 by Pro Football Hall of Famer and former Minnesota Vikings defensive end Jared Allen.

"Building a home that meets the needs of a critically wounded veteran and their family takes a team of people who believe in our mission. Andersen is an important part of that team, and we’re grateful for their support and commitment to the veterans we serve. Their partnership helps us create homes where veterans can live more independently, and families can make memories together for years to come.”

A Personal Connection to the Mission

For Charlie Jackson, account sales manager at Andersen, supporting veterans through JAH4WW is both personal and professional. He has found great purpose being involved in several veteran home projects in his region, helping coordinate logistics, support product selection.
"My father was a World War II Marine, so supporting veterans has always been personally meaningful to me. These projects bring Andersen's work into focus because you can see how thoughtful product choices and accessible design come together to make everyday life easier for a veteran and their family."

As part of his role at Andersen, Jackson has worked alongside project teams throughout the construction process to help identify window and door solutions that support each homeowner’s unique accessibility, mobility and long-term independence needs. Depending on the project, considerations may include wider openings, low- or zero-threshold transitions, accessible hardware placement and patio door solutions designed to create smoother movement throughout the home and between indoor and outdoor living spaces.
"Being involved from the drawings and product selection through the home's completion makes these projects especially meaningful. As a 10-year Andersen employee, I'm proud to contribute my experience to help identify the products and solutions that best support each homeowner's accessibility, comfort and long-term needs."

What is Jared Allen's Homes for Wounded Warriors?

AH4WW is a nonprofit organization dedicated to building custom, mortgage-free accessible homes for critically injured U.S. military veterans. Founded in 2009 by former Minnesota Vikings defensive end and Pro Football Hall of Famer, Jared Allen, the organization works alongside community partners, builders, donors and manufacturers to help veterans transition into homes designed around their unique needs.

How does Andersen support JAH4WW?

Andersen supports JAH4WW through product donations, financial support and employee donations. Since first working with the organization in 2018, Andersen has donated windows and doors to 12 veteran home projects across the country.

The company's support also includes annual Veterans Day fundraising promotions through Andersen's Parts Store, which has donated a portion of proceeds to JAH4WW since 2023. Additionally, Andersen employees can support the organization's mission through that company’s employee giving program through which qualifying donations are matched by the company, helping to amplify the impact of volunteer service and charitable giving.

Together, these efforts help create accessible homes for wounded veterans and support JAH4WW's broader mission of serving veterans and their families.

What makes a home accessible?

Every veteran's needs are different, which means every JAH4WW home is uniquely designed for the individual who will live there.

Depending on the veteran's circumstances, accessible design may include wider pathways, barrier-free transitions, accessible entrances, single-level layouts and other mobility-conscious features that improve movement throughout the home. The goal is to create a space that promotes independence while reducing physical obstacles that can make everyday activities more difficult.

What role do windows and doors play in accessible design?

Thoughtful design decisions throughout a home can contribute to accessibility, including windows and doors.

Accessible design can include mobility-conscious product choices that make everyday tasks easier for homeowners. For example, casement windows with crank handles may be easier to operate than traditional double-hung windows that require lifting and lowering a sash. Andersen can also provide ramp systems for select patio doors to help improve wheelchair accessibility and create smoother transitions between indoor and outdoor spaces.

In a recent JAH4WW project for U.S. Army Sergeant Anesi Maverick Tu'ufuli, Andersen products included Andersen® 100 Series windows and a large MultiGlide™ door with a flush sill designed to create easier transitions between indoor and outdoor living spaces. Zero-threshold transitions and accessible openings can help make it easier for homeowners to move comfortably throughout their homes.

How can patio doors support mobility and ease of movement in the home?

Accessibility needs vary from homeowner to homeowner, and product selection is often tailored to an individual's mobility requirements. Andersen offers features designed to help improve accessibility, for example, Andersen's 200 Series hinged inswing patio door is available in a configuration that meets accessibility requirements established by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Federal Fair Housing Act.

As with any accessible housing project, builders and homeowners should work together to identify the products and features that best support the homeowner's unique needs and mobility requirements.

Building More Than Homes

At Andersen, creating spaces where people can thrive has always been at the heart of what we do. Through work with organizations like JAH4WW, that purpose extends beyond windows and doors.

Together, Andersen and JAH4WW are helping create homes that support accessibility, foster independence and enhance quality of life for veterans and their families while honoring the service and sacrifice of those who have served our country.
