Grantee Spotlight: Tubman Offers a Safe Haven for People in Need

Honoring Harriet Tubman as its namesake, Minnesota-based nonprofit Tubman has been helping people walk their own paths toward safety, hope and healing for over 45 years.

In the 1850s, Harriet Tubman, American abolitionist and social activist, helped hundreds of people move from fear to freedom. Today, her legacy lives on. With Harriet Tubman as its namesake, a Minnesota-based nonprofit has been helping people walk their own paths toward safety, hope and healing for over 45 years.

Andersen has supported Tubman’s work for more than 20 years, helping people in our headquarters community find stability and a path forward through our philanthropy, board leadership and product donations.

As a multi-service organization, Tubman helps an average of 20,000 people per year of all ages, genders and cultural backgrounds who are facing relationship violence, sexual assault, exploitation, homelessness, addiction, mental health challenges and other forms of trauma.

A Vision for Thriving People, Healthy Relationships, Peaceful Communities

Tubman serves the Greater Twin Cities, Minnesota metro area, with some clients coming from greater Minnesota on their journey to freedom. The organization’s holistic and trauma-informed services include a 24-hour resource and crisis line, safety planning, safe shelter, supportive housing, legal services, mental and chemical health services, youth outreach and support groups.
"Stability in housing is everything. So often people who are experiencing the issues that we serve are uprooted from their home. You're not just building a window, you're actually creating a safe space for people to go."

Shannon Brooks, Tubman board member

Support from Andersen

Housing is one of our company’s four giving areas. Through corporate giving, grants from the Andersen Corporate Foundation, employee volunteerism and product donations, we support a wide-range of nonprofits providing critical housing services to families in the communities where we operate – from emergency housing and shelters like Tubman, to affordable housing projects. As a window and door manufacturer, we know firsthand the importance of safe, stable, affordable housing, which is why investing in the nonprofits who do this work well is so important, and so impactful.

"Through the work we do every day, our impact extends far beyond our products and services," said Eliza Chlebeck, vice president of communications and community. "Tubman is an exemplary organization making a difference for thousands of people each year in our community who are facing life-altering hardships."

For over a century, our vision has been to make the world a better place by living up to the promise that everyone benefits from their association with Andersen. This promise includes the communities where we live and work. We are proud to give back, and to inspire possibility by empowering people and communities to achieve their full potential.
