Andersen Corporation Commissions New Steam Generating Facility
118BAYPORT, Minn. (June 25, 2008) — A new steam generating plant at Andersen Corporation’s Bayport production facility is a testament to the company’s 105-year commitment to innovative design and environmental stewardship in its own operations. This new state-of-the-art steam plant provides the ability to use virtually all renewable energy to help power manufacturing operations.
Adhering to its strong environmental performance standards for both manufacturing products and processes, Andersen selected a steam sourcing solution that allows it to use wood byproducts from its manufacturing operations as the plant’s primary energy source. Two new wood-fired boilers provide enough energy to heat and cool Andersen’s 65 acre campus and to power equipment used in the manufacturing process. Prior to building the new plant, Andersen purchased most of its energy from a neighboring power plant that eliminated the service to their customers, including Andersen.
Wood sawdust was chosen as the primary boiler fuel because it is a renewable resource and an ample supply is generated from the company’s operations. The new boilers are equipped with an electrostatic precipitator, which removes particulate matter from the boiler exhaust and the ash byproduct is approved for use by area farmers to amend the soil in their fields.
Andersen was recognized by The Minnesota Environmental Initiative with the 2007 Green Business and Environmental Management Award for the new steam plant. This distinction is given for outstanding partnership between business, government and environmental groups. In addition, it received recognition and accolades from state and local representatives, business leaders and media. Andersen has also conducted facility tours with visiting environmental engineers and educators to provide information around the plant’s design and operation.
“Andersen is committed to environmental stewardship, not only in the products that we make, but how we make those products,” said Jim Humphrey, President and CEO, Andersen Corporation.
