Two basic configurations are used in combination design: 1-way combinations and 2-way combinations.
1-Way Combinations |
Stacked
Stacked combinations are vertical combinations where the opposite sides (both side jambs) of individual units are fastened to the building structure.
Ribbon
Ribbon combinations are horizontal combinations where the opposite sides (head and sill) of individual units are fastened to the building structure.
2-Way Combinations |
Ribbon & Stacked
2-way combinations exist when multiple vertical stacks and horizontal ribbons are joined together. Unlike 1-way combinations, the opposite sides (head and sill, or both side jambs) of individual units are not necessarily fastened directly to the building structure. 2-way combinations are joined with both vertical and horizontal joining material and may require reinforced joining materials depending on the local building code requirement for design windload (measured in pounds per square foot, PSF).
