Owning a vacation home in the forest on a secluded island can be a dream for some. The exclusive Muskoka cottage country near Toronto, Ontario fits the bill for many of the well-heeled among us.
This location was named National Geographic's "2011 Top Summer Places to Travel,” and an Ontario family decided it was the perfect place for their second-home lifestyle.
While summers are beautiful, the area experiences extreme winter conditions. In addition, the home is perched well above the rocky shoreline and is exposed to high winds circulating off the lake, requiring top performance from the home’s structural envelope. This made the choice of windows and doors for the cottage a critical factor in the overall performance of the structure and comfort of its occupants.
Working with Muskoka Windows and Door Centre, approximately 80 Andersen® A-Series casement and awning windows were selected based on energy efficiency and durability of the products. A-Series product performance was a deciding factor given the exposure of the home’s extreme location. Featuring Low-E4® SmartSun™ glass, the windows and doors deflect unwanted solar heat, while allowing visible light to stream through. The glass technology also helps protect furniture, carpet and drapes from fading by blocking 95 percent of damaging ultraviolet rays.
In addition, 3 1/2" white exterior trim was used along with white painted interiors to maintain the cottage’s contemporary design. The home also features A-Series Frenchwood® hinged patio doors.
The project was completed in spring 2011. A boathouse will be added to the property this year, also featuring A-Series windows.
